Understanding Steroids

by admin on October 18, 2022

Steroids, or anabolic-androgenic steroids, AAS, are synthetic reproductions of the male sex hormone testosterone, which is a naturally occurring substance.

The term anabolic originates from the Greek word anabole meaning “that which is thrown up, mound”. As such, the term anabolic is often used to refer to processes that build up organs and tissues, especially muscles. AAS do this by increasing the protein synthesis within cells.

Androgenic comes from the Greek word andros which means “of a man” + “born” and thus refers to male sexual characteristics.

Steroids refers to a class of organic compounds, or drugs, that are often used to treat a variety of conditions, including hormone deficiency, diseases that cause a loss of lean muscle mass, for instance AIDS and cancer, asthma, chronic lung disease, or different skin conditions including allergic reactions . Steroids can be hormones, like the female and male sex hormones - estradiol and testosterone - cholesterol, or a variety of plant and animal steroids.
